Green Drinks

Every month people who work in the environmental field meet up at informal sessions known as Green Drinks.

We have a lively mixture of people from NGOs, academia, government and business. Come along and you’ll be made welcome. Just say, „are you green?“ and we will look after you and introduce you to whoever is there. It’s a great way of catching up with people you know and also for making new contacts. Everyone invites someone else along, so there’s always a different crowd, making Green Drinks an organic, self-organising network.

Clay Shirky: How cognitive surplus will change the world

Clay Shirky looks at „cognitive surplus“ — the shared, online work we do with our spare brain cycles. While we’re busy editing Wikipedia, posting to Ushahidi (and yes, making LOLcats), we’re building a better, more cooperative world.

Clay Shirky believes that new technologies enabling loose collaboration — and taking advantage of “spare” brainpower — will change the way society works.

Tweethaus

TweetHaus is the fifth project for FLUX. It is a public art + ecology project focused on citizen science and interactive learning. It fosters community through the design, construction and installation of bird habitats and public pathways in urban environments.

TweetHaus expresses itself on multiple scales, using the platform of birdhouses to create an ecologically-oriented place-making experience. The project honors the interconnection of human communities and the natural world and builds an expanding network of birdhouses, pathways, public artists and citizen scientists. Grounded in our belief that art builds community and that community can build art, the first installment of TweetHaus takes place in our own backyard—Oakland, CA, starting in March 2012.

For more information.

HARRY WEST about the three rules of innovation

Harry West is the CEO of Continuum, a global design and innovation firm. He guides the strategic direction and global growth for Continuum, the mastermind design firm behind many products and brands consumers encounter in everyday life. He travels and learns constantly to stay connected with real needs in our rapidly changing world. At HBR Blog Network he explains his three main rules to give teams the ability to innovate.

1. Manage Creative Friction

The wrong type of friction on teams makes people hate each other and hold back, but the right type gets results. How do you encourage good creative friction?

Share the experience. The whole team, including the client, work together through all steps of the ideation process from consumer learning, to analysis of possibilities, to envisioning the final idea. Working with consumers directly to understand their needs and aspirations is an especially powerful bonding experience that gives the team a common sense of purpose, and creates a shared foundation of facts and feelings.

Remove communication barriers. People communicate in different ways, so we do social styles analyses to help people understand how their teammates tend to communicate. Are they a driver, amiable, expressive or analytical? They learn that it is not that Harry is necessarily overbearing, but that he tends to lead with ideas, it is not that Susan isn’t on task, but she tends to consider people first. Once you understand why people are different, you can laugh about it — rather than get frustrated — and it becomes a way for the team to bond, rather than a reason for breakdown.

Have at it. Lock yourselves in the project room and engage in a passionate debate. The magic in innovation is to combine perception with analysis. Few people can do this alone, but a well-functioning team can be prolifically creative and sharply critical at the same time. The team as a whole acts like one open and self-aware brain that is creating and arguing with itself at the same time. The communication is fast and brutally honest and there is only one agenda.

fvf – Jessica Barensfeld and Simon Howell

Jewellery Designer and Photographer, New York, Brooklyn-Williamsburg

Through working for yourself, did your relationship to money change?
Jessie: Yeah it has a little bit. I learned to realize that there is always going to be an issue with money. Its really how you look at it.

Simon: I think both of us and our generation have been brought up in a consumer society and we are only just now, at our age realizing that it doesn’t have to be that way. You can have good things in life without having a lot of money, or be constantly buying. And that is what is happening now.

Freunde von Freunden is an international interview magazine that portrays people of diverse creative and cultural backgrounds in their homes or within their daily working environments.

Problems worth solving

This book was started with the intent of changing design and social entrepreneurship education. As these disciplines converge, it becomes evident that existing pedagogy doesn’t support either students or practicioners attempting to design for impact. This text is a reaction to that convergence, and will ideally be used by various students, educators, and practicioners:

One audience is professors and educators of design, who are challenged with reinventing their educational curriculum in the face of a changing world. For them, this book should act as both a starting point for curriculum development and a justification for why this development is necessary—it should answer the question „what should design and social entrepreneurship education look like?“
Another audience is made up of fresh-out-of-school designers, who are bored and uninspired by their jobs. For them, this book should answer the question „how can I redirect my design efforts to something meaningful?“

Finally, a last audience is made up of practicing designers and entrepreneurs, who are looking to achieve social impact in their work. For them, the book should answer the question „what tools and techniques can I use in my work to drive impact through design?“
Read the book online.

Chris Anderson: How web video powers global innovation

TED’s Chris Anderson says the rise of web video is driving a worldwide phenomenon he calls Crowd Accelerated Innovation — a self-fueling cycle of learning that could be as significant as the invention of print. But to tap into its power, organizations will need to embrace radical openness. And for TED, it means the dawn of a whole new chapter … I do agree :)

Can government be run like the Internet, permissionless and open? Coder and activist Jennifer Pahlka believes it can — and that apps, built quickly and cheaply, are a powerful new way to connect citizens to their governments — and their neighbors.

Need something new? Go Netcycling.

Netcycler is an internet service that lets you swap and giveaway your old stuff. Swapping is fun, handy, environmentally friendly and free! With Netcycler you can: Swap your old stuff for things you actually want; get free stuff; and give away stuff for free.

If you are in Germany then check out Netcycler.de to start trading. If you are from the UK or Finland please visit netcycler.co.uk or netcycler.fi

It’s a whole new way to swap

When you use Netcycler your old stuff becomes currency. It’s amazing the things you can get with the items you offer. Netcycler creates matches between offers and wishes. All you need to do is list what you want to get rid of and what you would like in return. Netcycler forms trade rings between three or more people, so that each ring member both gives and receives something. This greatly increases the possibility of getting your wishes. You don’t have to arrange the ring – Netcycler will let you know who to deliver your offer to and who to fetch your wish from. Then you can arrange to meet the person somewhere convenient or use our easy integrated shipping service to deliver the items.

Visualisation Tools and Resources

Outstanding data visualisations allow the scale and dimensions of a story to emerge. Drawing by numbers organises data visualisation tools under four categories – Charts and graphs; Mapping and mashups; Design, layout and presentation; and Data management tools. Browse through them below.

However advanced their capabilities, most of the tools profiled here address fairly simple data and design tasks. They also have feature sets that anyone with a little technical knowledge (and some persistence) could use to make something. They all have acceptable support structures and materials and a degree of non-English language support. They are also all free to use or open source. Have a look.

Toolkit for Service Design

The team behind Canvanizer:

We are located in the Coworking Space Nuremberg, Germany. At last years Nuremberg Startup Weekend we used the Business Model Canvas by Alexander Osterwalder in the teams to brainstorm about the ideas. You can download the Business Model Canvas as a free poster under Creative Commons Share Alike 3.0 Unported License.

At this years Startup Weekend Nuremberg we decided to make a simple web tool with easy to share links between team members who are brainstorming on a project, but not necessary in the same room.

This is a very very early prototype. We update it in short intervals. We hope you enjoy it. Please feel free to use, share and give us feedback. Just send us an email or tweet us @canvanizer. Go explore the tool.

This is Service Design Thinking

The Global Service Jam already started in Hamilton, New Zealand. I will participate in Berlin and I am really looking forward to a crazy – out of control – fun weekend. Besides that, if your are wondering: Service Jam? It is about Service Design, a tool that takes a human centered approach to develop and improve services. I think it is a great tool, that can have have good impact, if you use it for the right kind of projects.
